Topic: The Value of Scripture

Text: 2 Timothy 3:16 – 17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
This is a very true passage. There is profit in learning from scripture because it contains the wisdom of God. If properly studied scripture will point to good ethical behavior, and to the sinful behavior we as Christians are to avoid. Scripture will also give instruction on the ordering of the church in society and ordering the church itself.
I believe that the most important teaching scripture contains is the description of the life of Christ contained in the Gospels. It is there that we learn the meaning of compassion and how to truly love our neighbors as Jesus loves us. It is through the viewing of Jesus life that we begin to learn the meaning of loving our neighbor. As we meditate on how Jesus interacted with people and how he served them we begin to understand that we are to do likewise. It does not make life easy because what Jesus did and calls us to do runs counter to the general thinking of our culture. For example, Jesus says serve others while the culture says serve yourself. Jesus says give while the culture says take. Jesus says seek first the kingdom while the culture says seek first the self.
Heavenly Father, In Jesus life he exemplified the kind of steadfast love you provide for us in His words and in His actions. May we as we follow Him seek to live our lives as he did serving others and introducing them to You to bring honor and glory to Your name. In Jesus name, amen.
