Topic: Treasure in Heaven
Author: Bob O’Brien
Text: Matthew 6:19-21
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew chapter six is a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Much of this part of the sermon talks about doing things away from the public eye. Jesus is telling us that when we do things out of the public eye His father will reward us, but when we do them openly our reward comes from the adulation of men but not from the Father. In this section He is admonishing us to lay up our treasure in heaven because when we do that is where our hearts will be directed whereas if we lay up treasure on earth we will be bound to this earth and the treasure will be destroyed by rust and moth it is perishable. How do we lay up treasure in Heaven? We do this through the fasting, prayer, and giving that we do in ways that only the Father knows. For Jesus setting our minds on the kingdom is far more important than seeking to prosper in this world. For the things of this world will pass away, but the kingdom of God is eternal and does not pass away.
Heavenly Father, You provide for us in Your word directions for pleasing you and You give us clear guidance on how to do this . Help us to follow your direction, that we might live our lives in such a way that it pleases You and brings honor and glory to Your name. In Jesus name, Amen.
